Koblenz, Germany

April, 2000

At the junction of the Rhine and Mosel rivers in northern Germany lies the town of Koblenz. From Koblenz, it is possible to travel by boat past the many castles which dot the banks.

Our plan for the day was to do just that: find a boat tour and travel past several of the castles with, perhaps, a visit to one or two on the way. In addition to Fabrizio and Daniela, our friend Luca and his family--Claudia, Simone, and Sophia--would join us on the trip. Simone and Sophia are the same age as Alex and Juli and we all thought they would get along well. We were right.

We arrived in Koblenz on a bright and brisk morning to learn that the boat tours do not start until later in the month. However, it was possible to take a short boat tour circling around the junction of the two rivers. This gave us a chance to see the local castle as well as some of the homes and churches.

It was an enjoyable trip of just the right length. We had a chance to see several interesting and historic buildings while having a little bit of time to chat. But by the end, the children had had enough and were ready to start playing.

After a delicious Sunday lunch, they had their chance. At a park along the waterfront and later at the home of Luca and Claudia, they played with much excitement and energy. The spring mounted riding toys were especially enjoyable.

All-in-all, the day was a great success and one that we would like to repeat soon.

Here are some pictures from our day:
