The Colosseum had to have been one of the first domed stadium. Up to 70,000 people could watch the combats on the main floor while a special crew of sailors maintained the canvas canopy which covered it all.
The main floor was wood over a basement which contained cages for wild animals and pens for storing equipment and scenery. The basement contained elevators that would lift and release wild animals through trap doors in the main floor to surprise and attack the gladiators.
On the grounds of the Colosseum is the arch of Constantine. This was erected to memorialize the battle where Constantine believed God led him to victory and where Christianity became the official religion of Rome. When Juli saw it, she said "Hey, that's just like we have at home!" (Thinking of the Arch de Triumph in Paris)
