The Southern neighbor of the Dordogne river valley is the Valley of the Lot.  What a different feel to the countryside.  Where the Dordogne registers in the mind as a dark green land with yellow building stones, the Lot is silver and white--white stones and oak trees with grey-green leaves.  It just is different--a little coarser, a little wilder.  We had lunch in the cliff top village of St. Cirq and then enjoyed the winding river road down to Cahors and the Pont Valentre.

The road between the cliff and the river Lot. Defensive bridge built 1308-60. It defied the English during the Hundred Years war: It was never even attacked. St. Cirq La Popie from above. Note the 15C church. St. Cirq Lapopie from across the river. The La Popie fortress stood at the hightest point.
