The city of Bourges was a last minute addition to our itinerary.  We found ourselves tired of being in the car and with another day before Brian had to be back to work so we took the opportunity to break up the drive.

What a great surprise!  It has a really vibrant 15-16th century old town and a cathedral that we all agreed was the most impressive one we've visited yet.  The windows alone---Wow! 12-17th century works of art.  The windows surrounding the ambulatory were put in from 1215-1225 and they just knock your socks off.  The colors are so vivid and the symbolism really tells the stories of the bible.  The exterior is being restored (like the rest of Europe...) and has some wonderful stonework and story telling.  The Last Judgement doorway leaves no doubt to what it's trying to say.

Wow!

Five doors leading to five aisles. Sad to see the fence protecting us from falling rock. The Last Judgement. 13C sculpture with Archangel Michael weighing souls and Abraham welcoming the saved. The whole story of the nativity in glass. A segment from the Apocalypse window. The central figure is Christ distributing the flames of Pentecost and the surrounding circles host the 12 disciples and the 12 patriarches. The kids found plastic strips with 4" talls wires sticking out. These go on ledges and such to keep the pigeons away. Place Gourdain House of the Three Flutes. Check out the corner pillar.
