Rocamadour is really impressive. It has a dramatic cliff-hanging layout with a defensive chateau above the church buildings with the village built below. It's fame is based on the miracles that started occurring in the 12th century after a hermit's grave was uncovered. The identity of the hermit is lost to time--now he is known as St. Amadour. Henry Plantagenet was cured when he knelt before the statue of Mary, Mother of Jesus and that started a parade of royalty and church leaders making pilgrimages to Rocamadour. During the middle ages, as many as 30,000 pilgrims would show up on major days of pardon and the entire valley floor would be turned into a camp. Local tribunals throughout Europe would impose pilgrimage on sinners. They came in sackcloth and wearing chains and only after climbing the 223 steps on their knees and presenting themselves before the Virgin, would a certificate and medal be issued so they could prove they had made amends.
