Honfleur is an ancient port town on the Seine delta. It is from this port
that the first European to navigate the length of the Mississippi set sail as
well as countless fishermen, explorers, and pirates. Today it is a tourist
center with a scenic city center around the old port. You will understand
why when you see the night pictures.
The town is located south of the Alabaster Coast--a stretch of high white cliffs overlooking the sea. It is connected by the suspension bridge with the longest suspended span in the world. It is amazing how something as utilitarian as a bridge can be so lovely. When we went to visit the Coast, it was overcast, blustery, and rainy. Not particularly the best weather for a hike on the edge of the cliffs. So instead we visited the Benedictine monastery where the drink Benedictine was invented and is still produced. An interesting tour of the distillery followed by a sample of their famous beverage--not a bad way to spend a rainy day. Scroll down a bit to see the
pictures.
