At the beginning of the 14th century, the Pope felt a need to move out of Rome.  Avignon was selected as the new center of Christianity in Europe and the new home for the Pope.  In all, ten popes have called Avignon home.

The Avignon of today shows the effects of being a center of religion and culture for more than 300 years.  Grand constructions, defensive walls, and a medieval city center combine to make a beautiful town.  The Palais des Papes (Papal Palace) was particularly impressive.
